Interior Design FAQs
How much does hiring an interior designer cost?
On average, interior designers charge between $100 to $300 per hour for their services, not including the price of furniture. Prices vary based on the design space size and the amount of service you are looking for. Our talented, experienced interior design team provides in-person design and e-design for customers who prefer online services or live outside of Utah. Our designers often communicate transparently with you throughout the project. Our initial interior design consultations are free with the purchase of one of our stunning furniture pieces.
How long does the remodeling design process take?
The remodeling design process takes anywhere from six weeks to four months. Typically, larger or more complicated projects take more time. Designers want to be thorough and precise and spend time with you, understanding your vision and scope of the project, gathering measurements, and creating a design board and color rendering of your home.
What is the difference between an Interior Designer and an Architect?
An architect designs, plans, and oversees building interiors and spaces. Architects are primarily responsible for the bones of a building or the overall look and construction. On the other hand, an interior designer focuses on the actual furnishing and decoration of an interior, such as wall colors, flooring, light fixtures, appliances, window coverings, accessories, and more.
What interior design tricks make a small space feel bigger?
If you want to make a small space feel bigger, cut the clutter and instead go for organized items out of sight. Use soft, light hues and whites, which make a room feel more open and airy. Use a lot of natural light, add ambient lighting, and avoid drapes or window coverings when possible. As for furniture, use fewer pieces and arrange them so they are out of the way of walkways. Use low-profile furniture in the room and taller pieces up against the walls. Keep upholstery neutral and straightforward, and use clear, glass, or reflective materials for tables and wall hangings.
What are the most common interior styles?
Today’s most common and most popular interior design styles include modern, mid-century modern, minimalist, traditional, contemporary, industrial, and Scandinavian. At San Francisco Design, we choose the latest and most popular modern, mid-century modern, minimalist, and contemporary styles and create furniture that is unique, stylish, and made for you.
Can I use an interior designer for just one room?
Yes! We can provide services for any of your interior design needs, whether it is one room, multiple rooms, or a whole house remodel.
How many colors should be in a room when decorating?
Though some people choose to decorate with only one or two colors, and others choose more, three colors are a good number to use when decorating a room. One of the most popular and straightforward color rules in interior design is the 60-30-10 rule; the dominant color is 60% of the room, the secondary and complementary color makes up 30% of the room, and the third tone is used in 10% of the room. There can be various hues or shades of each color, but a good design rule is to use three main colors.
What are the easy and cost effective interior decoration ideas?
The easiest and most cost-effective interior design ideas are decluttering your space and organizing storage out of sight. You can likewise change the look of a room by reorganizing furniture, donating or selling a piece or more that no longer fits your needs or style, and replacing one or two pieces for a whole new look. Changing throw pillows or adding a fresh coat of paint are also easy and cost-effective ways to redecorate a space.
What are the home decor mistakes people usually make?
People’s mistakes are varied, but many stem from a lack of planning and intention. For example, choosing the wrong lighting, selecting the paint color before fabrics and textiles, not measuring for furniture, and choosing the wrong size area rug or furniture pieces are all mistakes you can avoid with better planning. Other errors include hanging art too high, adding too many things in a space, not choosing a focal point, avoiding color, and having too coordinated and matching items. Remember to add your personality to decorating, and don’t be afraid to seek a second professional opinion.
How do I find my own personal interior design style?
Discovering your individual interior design style can take time. Start by analyzing what you already have and love. What pieces do you have in your home that you want to incorporate into your new space? What colors are you drawn to? What patterns and styles? You can also take color, print, and design cues from your closet. Finally, you can start curating pictures of rooms you like on Pinterest, Instagram, or magazines (online and in print). Our professional interior design staff can help you discover your style through a short consultation.
How do you make a dark room seem brighter?
First, focus on lighting. Increase your natural light by cleaning windows, removing window covers, and adding a door with windows if possible. Install additional lighting in your room. Ideally, you want to have at least three light sources in addition to the natural light in your room. Second, add mirrors. Third, make sure your room’s color palette is made up of light hues, such as white, beige, or light blue.
